What You Need:
- Small plastic bottle
- Water
Instructions:
- Fill the bottle to the brim with water.
- Place a loose piece of aluminum foil over the bottle.
- Put the bottle in the freezer and leave it inside until the water has frozen completely.
- After the water has frozen, notice how the ice has pushed up the foil, and maybe even pushed at the sides of the bottle.
Why?
Water occupies less space than ice, so when the ice froze, it needed more space than was available in the bottle, and pushed up the foil cover.
